About this role

About the role

You are the carpenter who finishes our homes. We build about 97% of every home inside our own factory, crane-deliver it, and set it on site. Your main job is the on-site installation: setting the home, tying it in, and finishing it right so a family can move in.

This is not a job that ends when the rain starts. When there is no on-site work, or the weather shuts a site down, we bring you into our Salinas factory to work on the homes being built there, whenever we have factory work for you. Our goal is to keep you working consistently, week after week.

At Framework First, the formal title for this role is Craftsman. We list it as Carpenter so the right people can find it.

What you'll do

On site:

  • Set and mount the home to its foundation, attach siding, and roll out and finish the eaves.
  • Button up the home so it is livable: the connections, trim, and details that make it a home.
  • Handle finish work and touch-ups after the set: drywall cracks from the road, caulking that split in transport, paint, and small details.
  • Clean up and leave every home move-in ready.

In the factory, when there is no on-site work or the weather keeps us off a site:

  • Framing, siding, trim and finish work on homes in production, alongside our factory team.

Where you work

Some days you are on site, some days you are in the factory. When a home is delivered, you work at the client's property across our Tri-County service area (Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and Santa Clara counties, plus occasional projects in San Luis Obispo County). We give you advance notice before every on-site day. You drive your own vehicle and meet us at the job site. Workdays run 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, on site or in the factory.

Our goal is a full 40-hour week, every week, on site or in the factory. You are first in line whenever on-site work is needed. Because much of this work happens on site, weather can stop it. When it rains, we do our best to move you into the factory to keep working, but especially during the rainy season, your hours may vary from week to week. We work hard to keep you working full-time, but 40 hours a week is not guaranteed. You will always know your schedule the day before.

Who you are

  • 5+ years of residential carpentry experience. This is not an entry-level role.
  • You can set a home and also make the paint, caulk, and details look right, reading a plan set without hand-holding.
  • You own the work. If a detail is not right, you fix it before anyone has to ask, because a family is moving into this home.
  • Reliable, on time, ready for real field conditions, and comfortable working in English on a team.
  • Comfortable switching between job sites and the factory as the work requires.
  • A valid driver's license and a reliable vehicle to reach job sites.

How you grow

Everyone starts as a Carpenter. No one starts as a Lead Carpenter.

Lead Carpenters earn $40 to $50/hour. You earn the Lead role by showing consistent quality, reliability and the ability to run a crew on site.
