Role Overview 

As a Controls Project Manager for our HVAC division, you will serve as the on-site leader for assigned controls projects, providing overall construction management and project execution oversight from pre-construction planning through commissioning and closeout. You will coordinate internal teams, subcontractors, field resources, and customers to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements.  

This role is responsible for driving project planning, scheduling, resource allocation, cost control, change management, risk mitigation, quality assurance, and construction documentation throughout the project lifecycle. You will lead project meetings, manage construction workflows, monitor progress against milestones, and proactively resolve field issues while maintaining strong customer relationships.

  

Success in this position requires balancing customer satisfaction with project profitability while ensuring consistent adherence to company processes, construction best practices, and project management standards. 


Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead assigned HVAC controls projects through hardware design, system programming, installation coordination, commissioning, and closeout. 
  • Coordinate day-to-day execution with subcontractors, electrical installers, technicians, designers, and administrative support as needed. 
  • Manage project financial performance, including costs, billings, collections, cash flow, and gross margin. 
  • Maintain regular communication with customers throughout all phases of the project and support the development of long-term relationships. 
  • Review contractual scope, evaluate field directives, bulletins, and schedule changes, and pursue change orders when additional work is identified. 
  • Coordinate procurement activities, including material selection, ordering, vendor pricing, availability, and delivery schedules. 
  • Oversee loading, device verification, system checkout, and commissioning of system controllers and related equipment. 
  • Validate complete system functionality, resolve issues, and ensure the final installation performs to project requirements. 
  • Prepare accurate as-built records, commissioning documentation, manuals, and warranty documentation. 
  • Provide site-specific training for owners and operators on system operation and use. 
  • Attend job progress meetings, report project status, and provide forecasts for revenue, costs, and margin as required. 
  • Ensure work is completed in compliance with applicable safety standards and legal requirements.

  • Improve every day through candid problem-solving, accurate documentation, and timely escalation of risks or changes. 
  • Win as one team by working collaboratively with customers, subcontractors, vendors, and Johnson Controls colleagues. 
  • Translate technical details into practical updates for both technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Balance customer expectations with project financial results by tracking billings, collections, and budget performance closely. 
  • Support crew development through coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance when needed. 
  • Follow established Johnson Controls standards for installation, commissioning, and field execution. 

Qualifications 

  • Education Experience


  • Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree in Construction Management, Engineering Technology, HVAC Technology, Building Automation Systems, or a related field, with a minimum of four years of experience managing, coordinating, or executing HVAC, Building Automation, controls, or commercial construction projects. 
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Engineering Technology, Building Automation Systems, HVAC Technology, or a related discipline, with demonstrated experience in project management, construction administration, and field operations leadership. 
  • Hands-on experience in the design, installation, startup, commissioning, and turnover of digital HVAC or Building Automation control systems. 
  • Strong HVAC controls knowledge with a solid understanding of control theory, HVAC equipment operation, and Building Automation Systems (BAS). 
  • Demonstrated construction management experience, including project planning, scheduling, resource coordination, subcontractor management, and field execution oversight. 
  • Working knowledge of construction processes, contract administration, project documentation, change order management, request for information (RFI) processes, submittal reviews, and project closeout activities. 
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, control schematics, sequence of operations, and project schedules. 
  • Understanding of project accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cost control, earned value principles, and project financial management. 
  • Knowledge of construction safety requirements, jobsite coordination practices, risk management, quality control processes, and applicable industry standards. 
  • Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, professionalism, ethics, and customer satisfaction. 
  • Experience managing project scope, labor productivity, material procurement, and project profitability while delivering successful customer outcomes. 
  • Customer-facing experience with strong organizational, leadership, and relationship management skills and a proven ability to successfully lead projects through all phases of execution. 
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, customers, contractors, and project team members. 
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects, priorities, deadlines, and competing stakeholder needs. 
  • Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Excel, project management software, scheduling tools, and other business applications.

HIRING SALARY RANGE: $89,400 - $134,250 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This role offers a competitive Bonus plan that will take into account individual, group, and corporate performance. This position includes a competitive benefits package.
